Athletics Hall of Fame 2025
Registration (Open August 2025) | Release
The Washington and Lee Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1987 by the Alumni Board of Directors to honor and perpetuate the memory of those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to W&L athletics and who have helped bring recognition, honor, distinction, and excellence to Washington and Lee University and its intercollegiate athletic program.
Alumni are eligible only if they have participated in two full seasons of varsity intercollegiate competition at W&L and have been graduated ten or more years. Non-graduates may be selected only upon approval of all members of the Selection Committee, and not until ten years have passed since they would normally have received the bachelor degree. Alumni also are eligible if they have made outstanding contributions or offered extraordinary service to W&L athletics after graduation.
Coaches, trainers, managers, and any other persons who have made outstanding contributions or who have offered extraordinary service to athletics at W&L are eligible. Current University coaches or staff members may not be considered for selection. Those who are not alumni may be selected upon retirement or death, or following a period of five years after having left the W&L Athletic Department.
Nominations or other pertinent correspondence may be sent to: Athletic Hall of Fame Committee, Athletic Department, Washington and Lee University, 204 W. Washington St., Lexington, VA 24450-0303. Nominations can also be made via our online nomination form.Â

Washington and Lee University and the Hall of Fame Committee give special thanks to lead donors Carol and Ben Grigsby ’72, P’12 and to the many donors who have contributed to the James D. Farrar, Jr. ’74 and Katharine Capito Farrar Endowment, named in honor of a couple who devoted 35 years of tireless service to W&L and continue to support the community in numerous ways. The Farrar Endowment helps make possible the W&L Hall of Fame program and will support athletics-related summer opportunities for students.Â
The Farrars have been deeply engaged in the life of the university, advancing its mission over decades. Jim, a 1974 W&L graduate, returned to the university in 1986 as assistant alumni director and held various roles at Washington and Lee before becoming senior assistant to the president while serving as secretary of the university in 2002. He served as senior advisor to the president and university secretary until his retirement in 2021, having worked with four rectors of the Board of Trustees and five presidents during that time. He remains engaged as a volunteer coach for the W&L women’s lacrosse team. Â
Kitty Capito Farrar spent over 20 years of her professional career as assistant director of Camp Alleghany for Girls in Lewisburg, W.Va., where she was a mentor and taught tennis. She remains actively involved in Alleghany’s alumnae association. She has served the university in countless ways over the years, from hosting events on and off campus to serving as an important ambassador for Washington and Lee. She has volunteered regularly within the Lexington community in a number of capacities through the years, including serving on the ConnectionsPlus Healthcare + Hospice board and as a Spanish translator for the Rockbridge County Health Department.
