Kat Michaels '08 was a four-year letterwinner for the women's lacrosse team and a team captain as a senior. Michaels earned First Team All-ODAC honors her final three seasons and collected multiple national awards her senior year.
In total, Michaels played in 67 games with 58 starts with 124 ground balls and 103 caused turnovers. The defense was the top-ranked unit in Division III in goals allowed two times during her career (2005 & 2007). Over the four-year stretch, the team posted a 63-15 overall record and a 32-0 mark in the ODAC, all of which resulted in ODAC titles and NCAA Tournament bids.
As an underclassman, she was voted First Team All-ODAC twice, earned All-Region recognition as a sophomore and junior and was named an IWLCA Third Team All-American in 2007.
In her final campaign for the Blue and White, Michaels garnered the ODAC and VaSID College Division Player of the Year awards. The defender was selected to the IWLCA’s All-Chesapeake Region First Team and was named a First Team All-American by the IWLCA, Inside Lacrosse and womenslacrosse.com in addition to being named the National Defender of the Year by all three organizations. At the W&L Athletics Awards banquet, she received the 2008 Pres Brown Award as the department’s most valuable senior women’s sport athlete.
In 2008, Michaels helped the defense rank third in the country with a 6.15 goals-against average, led the team with 29 caused turnovers, scooped up a second-best 43 ground balls and tallied one goal and five assists. Michaels remains in the program’s top-5 for single-season caused turnovers and all-time career caused turnovers.
