Mike Wenke '79, a standout in Washington and Lee University's men's basketball history, was a four-year letterwinner and served as the senior captain for the 1978-79 season. From the moment he stepped on the court as a first-year, Wenke made an immediate impact, securing the starting point guard position. He led the Generals to three conference titles including the 1976 Virginia College Athletic Association crown and back-to-back Old Dominion Athletic Conference trophies in 1977 and 1978. Wenke’s outstanding play as a sophomore earned him a spot on the 1976-77 All-ODAC Second Team.
During his four-year career, Wenke guided the team to 81 wins, boasting an impressive .743 winning percentage. His playmaking ability was unmatched, as evidenced by his W&L record of 683 career assists, a mark that remains untouched to this day. Wenke also recorded 206 career steals, showcasing his all-around game.
Wenke's records include the single-game assists record of 17 against York on November 26, 1977, and the top three spots for assists in a season—259 in 1977-78, 196 in 1976-77, and 135 in 1978-79. Even 45 years later, these achievements stand as a testament to his exceptional talent and leadership on the court.
