Susan Gaillard ’06 was one of the best volleyball players to have ever worn the Blue & White of Washington and Lee.

Gaillard was a four-year letterwinner for the Generals and was a starter at middle blocker from the very beginning.  She went on to amass 1,506 kills and 412 blocks over her four seasons, graduating second all-time at W&L in each category.  Her .402 career hitting percentage is still comfortably the top mark in the program annals and continued to be ranked 19th in Division III history as of her induction to the W&L Athletics Hall of Fame.  Additionally, she remains atop the W&L records for season hitting percentage, claiming each of the top three records in the category.

As a rookie in 2002, Gaillard started all 40 matches and helped lead the Generals to a 32-8 overall record.  She earned Second Team All-ODAC and Honorable Mention All-South Region honors, and she was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year after posting 385 kills and 106 blocks.  Her .385 hitting percentage set a new program record.

Her sophomore season was the first of three-straight years in which she garnered First Team All-ODAC and First Team All-State accolades.  She tallied a career-best 452 kills and 100 blocks, while once again setting the program record for hitting percentage (.423).  The Generals finished 35-4 overall and she went on to receive First Team All-South Region and Honorable Mention All-America accolades.

Gaillard helped lead the Generals to a 28-8 mark as a junior when she totaled 353 kills and 93 blocks, while hitting .392.  She added Honorable Mention All-Region laurels, as W&L won its third-straight ODAC title.

Her senior campaign in 2005 brought even more success, including a 32-5 mark and a fourth straight league title.  She repeated on the First Team All-Region team and earned a second Honorable Mention All-America citation after compiling 316 kills and a career-best 113 blocks.  She also posted a .407 hitting percentage that still ranks second all-time at W&L.

Over the course of her four seasons, Gaillard helped guide the Generals to a 127-25 (.836) overall record, a perfect 42-0 mark in regular-season ODAC matches and a 58-match winning streak against conference teams.  She also played in the NCAA Tournament all four years, winning three NCAA Tournament contests.
