About the Facility

The W&L Turf Field serves as the home of the Washington and Lee University field hockey program and stands among the premier field hockey venues in NCAA Division III. Designed by Clough Harbour & Associates and completed in the fall of 2000, the facility provides a championship-caliber environment for student-athletes to train, compete and pursue national success.

Located adjacent to Watt Field on the west side of campus, the lighted, multi-purpose facility measures 230 feet by 400 feet and features seating for 1,000 spectators. The venue includes a press box, concession and restroom facilities, equipment storage areas and a modern public address system, creating an outstanding game-day atmosphere for players and fans alike.

In the summer of 2023, the university completed a significant renovation of the facility, highlighted by the installation of an AstroTurf A12 playing surface, a new E-Layer foundation and upgrades to the field's irrigation infrastructure and sound system. As the original AstroTurf surface designed specifically for field hockey, the A12 system is recognized internationally for its durability, consistency and superior water retention. The knitted nylon surface provides exceptional speed and ball roll while maintaining the wet playing conditions preferred at the highest levels of the sport.

The facility received another major enhancement in 2024 through a generous gift from the family of former W&L field hockey student-athlete Katherine Berman '22, '25L, which funded a new LED digital display and scoreboard. Together, these improvements ensure that W&L student-athletes compete on one of the finest field hockey surfaces in the region.

The W&L Turf Field has hosted numerous conference and national events throughout its history, including the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championships in 2005, 2014, 2015 and 2024. Combining elite facilities, a championship tradition and continued investment in the student-athlete experience, the venue remains a cornerstone of Washington and Lee Athletics.
