FAQ

Why is W&L implementing new tailgating guidelines?

Like many colleges and universities nationwide, W&L is taking a proactive approach to maintain game-day activities that remain safe, enjoyable, and sustainable for all members of our community. These guidelines will allow the university to maintain the welcoming atmosphere that makes W&L special while addressing safety concerns that have become increasingly important in collegiate athletics.

Did something specific happen that caused these changes?

No. Like most colleges and universities, W&L periodically reviews its guidelines, policies, and practices to align with best practices. The university’s goal is prevention rather than reaction — while we maintain the traditions our community loves.

How do these guidelines benefit fans?

The university is committed to preserving the community spirit and traditions that make W&L game days special. These safety-focused guidelines allow for grilling, socializing and celebration. The goal is to enhance rather than diminish the experience so that everyone can participate safely.

Why is W&L being so cautious?

W&L's approach reflects our commitment to the safety and well-being of our tight-knit community. These guidelines are tailored to our facilities, traditions and community values.

Why are charcoal grills not permitted?

The restriction to gas grills only is a common safety measure at universities nationwide, as gas grills are easier to control, extinguish quickly, and pose less fire risk.

Are these alcohol guidelines new?

The university’s existing alcohol guidelines continue to be a point of reference and reflect both Virginia state law requirements and the University's commitment to responsible consumption. The focus is on creating an environment where everyone — including families with children and community members of all ages — can feel comfortable participating.

How will implementation of the guidelines be handled?

W&L’s approach emphasizes education and community self-regulation first. The goal is compliance through understanding rather than punitive enforcement. However, the university will act when it becomes apparent that safety is at risk or guidelines are intentionally violated.

What if the weather is bad? Are there indoor alternatives?

No. The guidelines focus on outdoor tailgating areas. In case of severe weather, tailgates should be canceled.

How will this affect smaller, family-oriented tailgates versus large group celebrations?

The guidelines apply equally to all tailgating activities, but they're designed to accommodate both intimate family gatherings and larger celebrations. The 10x10 tent restriction and other guidelines scale appropriately for different group sizes.
