Coach Jim Stagnitta served as the head coach of Washington and Lee University's men's lacrosse team for 12 seasons, from 1990 to 2001, and departed as the program's then-all-time wins leader with an impressive 136-42 overall record. Under his leadership, the Generals claimed six ODAC titles and made five NCAA Tournament appearances, including an outstanding run in his final four seasons, where the team achieved a combined 56-8 record.
In 2000, Stagnitta led the team to a 16-2 overall record, advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. The following year, his 2001 squad posted a 14-1 record and was the top-ranked team in the nation for much of the season. Remarkably, the Generals were ranked in the Division III Top 25 throughout all 12 seasons of Stagnitta's tenure, and they won at least nine games each year.
Stagnitta's coaching excellence was evident in the success of his players, who earned 40 All-America honors and saw four named ODAC Player of the Year. A four-time ODAC Coach of the Year, Stagnitta's influence extended beyond W&L as he continued his coaching career at Rutgers and professionally with the Denver Outlaws and Charlotte Hounds of Major League Lacrosse, as well as the Whipsnakes of the Premier Lacrosse League.
