Hall of Fame
Stacy Doornbos ’09 was one of the first truly great all-around women’s track & field athletes at Washington and Lee, earning four letters and serving as a team captain for her senior year.
Doornbos was the first woman in program history to be named the team’s most valuable athlete all four years, doing so while competing in the jumps, sprints, hurdles and combined events.
She was an eight-time ODAC Champion and she garnered All-ODAC honors an astounding 22 times, including eight first team laurels and 14 second team citations. She was also just the second female W&L track & field athlete to earn All-America honors, something she achieved three times.
Additionally, Doornbos graduated holding 13 individual school records and she was a member of four record-setting relay teams. As of her induction in 2020, she still maintained the program records for the 55-meter hurdles (7.37), the pentathlon (3,395), the 100-meter hurdles (14.82) and the heptathlon (4,767).
Doornbos’ impact on the program was immediate, claiming ODAC titles in the indoor and outdoor long jump, the indoor triple jump and the indoor 4x400 relay, as well as the outdoor 200 meters. In the process, she was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year for both the indoor and outdoor seasons, along with earning ODAC Athlete of the Year accolades in the indoor campaign. Following the year, she was named the W&L Outstanding First-Year Female Athlete of the Year.
As a sophomore, she claimed another ODAC title in the indoor triple jump, qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, where she placed 14th overall in the heptathlon.
Her junior campaign resulted in another ODAC title in the outdoor triple jump and she was named the ODAC Outdoor Athlete of the Year, along with garnering NCAA South Region Field Athlete of the Year laurels. She once again qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championship, placing third in the heptathlon to earn All-America accolades.
Doornbos capped her fine career with her best year as a senior in 2009. She won an ODAC title in the indoor long jump, helping the Generals to an ODAC team championship in the indoor campaign. She also qualified for the NCAA Championship in both the indoor and outdoor seasons, earning All-America honors in both the pentathlon and heptathlon, finishing fourth overall in each event.
Doornbos capped her career by winning the 2009 Pres Brown Award as the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete at W&L.
