The 1974 men’s lacrosse team was part of one of the greatest stretches a W&L athletics program has ever had.
Coming off the program’s outstanding 1973 season, the Generals made their mark again in the spring of ‘74. W&L went undefeated in the regular season at 14-0 and completed the year with a 15-1 overall record. The Blue and White rose to as high as No. 2 in the national polls and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division I Tournament for a second straight season.
The Generals possessed a high-octane offense that scored double-digit goals in all 16 games and averaged 14.8 goals per game. Defensively, W&L was just as strong, holding their opponents to single-digits 11 times that season and giving up just eight goals per contest.
Throughout the season W&L compiled signature wins against fellow nationally ranked University Division opponents such as the US Naval Academy 13-10 and the University of Virginia 13-11. Along with that, the Generals earned wins over Duke, North Carolina and Princeton, while adding ranked College Division wins against No. 1 Towson State, 19-17, in overtime and No. 3 Cortland State, 14-4.
After a perfect 14-0 regular season, W&L defeated Navy 11-9 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to advance to the National Semifinals for a second-straight season. The Generals suffered their only loss of the year 11-10 to Johns Hopkins and finished the season ranked third in the University Division with a 15-1 record.
Generals players were named All-America with midfielders Ted Bauer & Skip Lichtfuss and goalie Skeet Chadwick being named to the first team. Dave Warfield and Jim Farrar were named to the second and third team respectively, while Bryan Chasney and Rob Lindsey were honorable mention All-Americans.
