Dubbed "the littlest All-American," Terry Fohs, '62, typified the new spirit of football at Washington and Lee, leading the Generals to success in the early 1960s and garnering a few honors of his own along the way.
Fohs probably was the lightest linebacker in college football of his day, checking in at 5-7 and 145 pounds. Nonetheless, he led W&L in tackles all four years, rallying behind his battle cry of "Meet you on the bottom."
The Baltimore native was a key factor in the rebirth of W&L football, The Generals went from a 1-7 team his freshman year to a record of 17-0-1 in his final two years. In 1961, W&L was undefeated with a 9-0 record and won the Washington Touchdown Club's Timmie Award as the best small college team in the nation.
Fohs, who anchored a defense that allowed an average of a mere 5.1 points a game his final two years, was named to the Associated Press Little All-America team in both 1960 and 1961. His accomplishments were also a big hit on the local scene.
He was a two-time all-state selection and was named the Small College Football Player of the Year by the Virginia Sportswriters and Broadcasters in both 1960 and 1961.
