Peter Dean ’04 was a fantastic two-sport athlete competing in football and baseball. He was a three-year letterwinner in football and earned four letters in baseball while serving as a team captain for his senior campaign.
On the gridiron, Dean was a three-year starter at quarterback, finishing his career ranked Top 10 in program history for completions, attempts, yards and touchdown passes. Overall, he completed 303 passes for 3,469 yards and 19 touchdowns, and rushed for 156 yards and two more touchdowns.
Dean guided the Generals to a number of thrilling victories, but none more exhilarating than a 31-30 victory over Guilford during his senior season. With the clock ticking down, he faked a spike to fool the defense and then tossed the winning touchdown pass with 10 seconds remaining to lift W&L to the win. The play was later featured on ESPN’s “Hidden Video” segment.
As impressive as his football career proved to be, it paled in comparison to his exploits on the diamond. As a pitcher, Dean set the Old Dominion Athletic Conference record for career wins, going 29-7 overall with three saves. He also set school records for career earned run average (2.20) and strikeouts (232), while walking just 59 batters in a program-best 290.2 innings pitched.
Dean also set numerous game and season records while earning First Team All-ODAC honors each of his final three seasons. He added all-region laurels as a sophomore and junior and earned the ODAC Pitcher of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards following his senior campaign.
An outstanding student as well, Dean was named a CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-American each of his final two seasons, and he received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in 2004.
Dean served as the president of the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society during his time at W&L and he capped his career by earning the 2004 Pres Brown Award as the top senior male athlete at Washington and Lee.
