Kitt Murphy ’05 was an impactful two-sport athlete at Washington and Lee, competing in field hockey and lacrosse.Murphy earned four letters as a member of each program and served as a team captain for both sports as a senior.
In field hockey, Murphy was a four-year All-ODAC honoree and she completed her career as the program’s third-leading scorer with 53 points. She also graduated ranked second in career assists (15) and third in career goals (19).
Murphy’s rookie season with the field hockey team was W&L’s first varsity season as an ODAC member. Playing in the midfield, she scored one goal on her way to earning Honorable Mention All-ODAC accolades.
As a sophomore, Murphy was the team’s leading scorer, tallying 18 points on five goals and eight assists. She went on to post First Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-South Region laurels. She was the program’s very first player to earn an all-conference first team selection, as well as the first all-region honoree.
Her junior season resulted in 11 points on four goals and three assists. She was named Second Team All-ODAC and garnered VaSID Honorable Mention All-State laurels for the second straight year.
Murphy finished as the team’s second-leading scorer as a senior, totaling a career-best 22 points on nine goals and four assists. She was named Second Team All-ODAC and VaSID Honorable Mention All-State.
With the lacrosse team, Murphy was a four-year starter in the midfield, earning three All-ODAC citations and Third Team All-America honors as a senior. An excellent all-around field player, she totaled 61 points on 52 goals and nine assists, and added 180 ground balls, 101 caused turnovers and 96 draw controls. Murphy played on three ODAC Championship teams, producing a 56-17 overall record and a 30-2 mark in ODAC play.
Her impact on the lacrosse team was immediate, as she tallied a career-best 23 points on 22 goals and one assist during her rookie campaign. She also produced a career-best 33 caused turnovers, as well as 41 ground balls and 20 draw controls.
She picked up a career-high 53 ground balls, posted 35 draw controls and 21 caused turnovers, and notched 17 points (14g, 3a) as a sophomore when she earned First Team All-ODAC and First Team All-South Atlantic Region honors.
As a junior, she logged 10 goals and two assists, to go along with 34 ground balls, 27 caused turnovers and 23 draw controls. She was once again named First Team All-ODAC and added First Team All-State accolades.
Her senior season resulted in a deep run into the postseason, as the Generals advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. She notched six goals and three assists, as well as 52 ground balls, 20 caused turnovers and 18 draw controls. She also played a key role in the Generals leading Division III in scoring defense (5.41 gpg). For her efforts, she garnered Second Team All-ODAC, First Team All-South Atlantic Region, First Team All-State and Third Team All-America laurels.
Murphy has maintained an active lifestyle and takes part in triathlon competitions. In 2017, she earned Ironman All World Athlete recognition.
