Emily Applegate ‘07 was one of the greatest women’s tennis players in Washington and Lee’s illustrious history in the sport.
Applegate arrived at W&L in the fall of 2004 after spending her rookie season at the University of Richmond. Her impact was immediate and helped the Generals to a 22-1 overall record and a runner-up finish in the NCAA Division III Championship. Individually, she completed the year with a 15-1 singles record and a 17-3 doubles mark. She was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Player to Watch and garnered First Team All-America honors after reaching the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship while playing with Kristen McClung ‘07
As a junior, she once again helped the Generals to a national runner-up finish, ending the season with a 28-1 record. Individually, she was selected as ODAC Player of the Year and she garnered All-America honors in both singles and doubles. She went on to win the NCAA National Championship in singles and she was a nominee of the 2006 Honda Award, which is awarded to the Division III Female Athlete of the Year. She completed her junior campaign with a 33-3 singles mark and a 26-7 doubles record.
Applegate’s senior season culminated in the Generals claiming the first National Championship in program history, defeating Amherst in the title match, 5-2. As a team, W&L finished 25-1 overall. Individually, she added another ODAC Player of the Year citation and was once again named All-America in both singles and doubles. A year after winning the NCAA singles title, Applegate finished her senior season as the NCAA singles runner-up.
She completed her career with a 65-6 singles record and a 58-14 doubles mark, earning the 2007 Pres Brown Award as the most valuable senior women’s sports athlete at W&L.
