Paul Wallace ’02 had one of the finest careers of any soccer player in Washington and Lee history.
Wallace was a four-year letterwinner, serving as a team captain for his junior and senior seasons. He played in 64 career games as a midfielder and defender, totaling eight goals and 10 assists.
Wallace started all 17 games at midfield during his rookie season, totaling a career-best 11 points on three goals and five assists as the Generals finished 10-4-3 overall. Following the season, Wallace was named First Team All-ODAC and he received the ODAC Rookie of the Year award.
Wallace had an outstanding start to his sophomore campaign, tallying six points (2 G, 2 A) in his first nine games before suffering a season-ending knee injury. The Generals went on to finish the season 9-8 overall.
Upon returning to the pitch as a junior in 2000, Wallace moved to defense and thrived as the Generals won a school-record 19 games (19-2), claimed their first ODAC title since 1989 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament South Region final. Wallace started all 20 games, totaling one goal and one assist. He served as the leader for a defense that recorded a 0.65 goals-against average and 10 shutouts. Following the season, he garnered First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-State, First Team All-South Region and Second Team All-America honors.
Wallace helped lead the Generals back to the ODAC Championship game again as a senior when the team finished 12-4-1 overall. He started all 17 games and completed the season with two goals and two assists, while also helping the defense post a 0.84 goals-against average. Wallace was a repeat first team selection to the All-ODAC, All-State and All-Region teams, and he was also named the Player of the Year for both the ODAC and VaSID College Division. He also earned Third Team All-America honors as the first two-time All-America in program history.
The 1998 Washington and Lee Outstanding First-Year Male Athlete Award winner, Wallace was also recognized as the co-recipient of the Pres Brown Award as the school’s Outstanding Senior Male Athlete in 2002.
