Mears earned three letters in cross country and was elected as a team captain for the cross country team as a senior. She also garnered one letter with the track & field program, competing on the team as a sophomore.
In cross country, she competed as a first-year, sophomore and junior, earning First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-State and First Team All-Region accolades each season.

Following the season, she was presented with the team’s coaches and captains award for overall performance.
Mears also competed on the track & field team during her second year at W&L, claiming the unofficial ODAC Championship in the indoor two-mile run and in the outdoor 1,500 and 3,000 meter races.
Mears’ junior campaign proved to be one of the best in program history and she was named the team MVP. She claimed the Virginia Division II-III State Championship meet and won the ODAC individual title to help lead the Generals to a third-straight ODAC team championship. She was named the 1994 ODAC Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Year and she went on to place second overall at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional to once again qualify for the NCAA Division III Championship. There, she finished 18th overall to become just the second All-American in program history.
