Rodger Fauber ’63 was the greatest rebounder to ever play basketball at Washington and Lee University.

Fauber earned four letters on the hardwood, serving as a team captain for each of his final three seasons.

Despite standing just 6-foot-2, Fauber completed his career with the highest rebounding averages for a season (19.7) and career (16.4) in the history of collegiate basketball in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Fauber started all four seasons at the forward position, playing in 62 overall games and accumulating averages of 12.5 points and 16.4 rebounds per game while shooting 45.5 percent (331-727) from the floor.

Fauber’s contributions to the program were evident from the very beginning, as he played in 12 games during his rookie season, averaging 8.8 points per game and finished second on the team with 9.1 rebounds per contest.

As a sophomore, he earned Associated Press All-State laurels after leading the team in rebounding (16.8) and finished second in scoring (14.2).  Never was his game more refined than during a February 1961 game against the University of Virginia.  Fauber totaled 26 points on 9-of-11 shooting and grabbed 24 rebounds in leading the Generals to a 78-68 victory over the Cavaliers.

Fauber repeated on the AP All-State team as a junior in 1962, finishing second on the team in scoring (14.6) and leading the team and ranking 10th nationally with an average of 18.1 rebounds per game.  He personally secured nearly 37 percent of the team’s rebounds throughout the season, including a career-high 28 boards in a 71-58 win over Old Dominion.

Fauber’s final season once again culminated in AP All-State accolades, as he finished the season leading the team with career-best averages of 17.5 points and a school-record 19.7 rebounds per game.  His best outing was a 26-point, 27-rebound game in a 76-68 win over Widener, and he completed the season ranked third among small college players in rebounding average.

Fauber completed his spectacular career with 873 points and 1,014 rebounds, a total which still ranks second all-time at W&L.  He was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa and he was the 1963 recipient of the Wink Glasgow Spirit and Sportsmanship Award.
