Nathan Hottle was one of the school’s finest all-time scholar-athletes while participating in swimming and water polo.
As a water polo player, Hottle earned three letters and was named the team’s 1997 Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Additionally, he garnered all-tournament honors at the NCAA Division III Championships during his senior campaign.
In swimming, Hottle was a four-year letterwinner and served as a team captain for his senior season. He earned All-America honors a total of 11 times, including posting first team status in the 200 breast (three times), 200 IM (twice) and as a member of the 800 free relay.
Hottle won the 1995 National Championship in the 200 breast, at the time just the third swimmer in school history to win a national title. He graduated holding three individual school records and having been part of three record-setting relay squads. Upon being inducted to the W&L Athletic Hall of Fame, Hottle still held the W&L top times in the 100 breast (57.21), 200 breast (2:03.93) and 200 IM (1:54.08).
A champion in the pool and the classroom, Hottle twice earned GTE Academic All-America laurels, including as a first team selection in 1997. He also received the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship following his senior season.
Hottle concluded his fine career by receiving the W&L Outstanding Senior Male Athlete and William McHenry Scholar-Athlete Awards in 1997.
