Brook Hartzell '00 was a cornerstone of Washington and Lee's rise to national prominence in women's tennis. Hartzell was a four-year letterwinner and two-time team captain who combined competitive excellence with unwavering sportsmanship. A four-time First Team All-ODAC selection, Hartzell was twice named the ODAC Player of the Year and earned ITA All-America honors in both singles and doubles as a junior and senior. She competed in the NCAA Singles Championship three times and the NCAA Doubles Championship three times, earning the No. 2 seed in the 1999 NCAA singles draw.

Hartzell's senior season was particularly remarkable—she and doubles partner Melissa Hatley advanced to the NCAA Doubles Final, finishing as national runners-up, and helped lead the Generals to a third-place finish at the NCAA Team Championship. After her final campaign, Hartzell was honored with the ITA Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship Award for the South Region, a fitting tribute to her leadership and character on and off the court.

Over her four years, the team compiled a stellar 71-18 overall record and went undefeated (41-0) in conference play. Hartzell graduated third in victories and at the time of her induction, is eighth all-time in program history in both singles (83-33) and doubles (87-26) victories.
