Ericka Shapard ’98 enjoyed one of the most accomplished careers in Washington and Lee University women’s tennis history. A four-year letterwinner and senior co-captain, she earned First Team All-ODAC honors in singles and doubles in each of her four seasons. Shapard was named the ITA National Player to Watch following her sophomore campaign and capped her career by earning ODAC Player of the Year and ITA South Region Senior Player of the Year honors.

Shapard earned ITA All-America honors in both singles and doubles in 1998. She qualified for the NCAA Individual Championships three times in singles and once in doubles, advancing to the singles round of 16 and the doubles semifinals as a senior with Berry Blankinship ’98. The duo also won consecutive ITA/Rolex Southeast Regional doubles championships and competed twice at the ITA/Rolex National Small College Championships.

Shapard completed her career as the program record holder with 107 singles victories and 97 doubles wins. Her 30 singles victories in 1994-95 established a program first-year record, while her 26 doubles wins with Anna O’Connor ’97 in 1995 ranked second in program history.

During Shapard’s four seasons, Washington and Lee compiled a 74-12 overall record and went undefeated in conference play with a 34-0 mark. The Generals won four ODAC championships and recorded four consecutive top-four NCAA finishes, highlighted by a national runner-up performance in 1996.
