W&L Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Randolph-Macon

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team used a six-run fourth inning to pull for an 8-4 win in game one of a doubleheader with Randolph-Macon en route to a split of the two games on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Generals dropped the nightcap, 10-0.

Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, W&L (11-13, 7-7) senior catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) was hit by a pitch with one out. Senior first baseman Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft) then reached on a fielder's choice and an R-MC (11-12, 8-4) throwing error allowed Lewis to advance to third. Junior rightfielder Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out and senior third baseman Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) drove in Lewis with a groundout.

The Generals added five unearned runs in the inning, all with two outs, on a wild pitch, an RBI double from sophomore designated hitter Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond), and RBI singles from first-year shortstop Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day), sophomore leftfielder C.J. Thompson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) and sophomore centerfielder Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) to assume a 7-4 lead.

Thompson added an RBI double in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Senior Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) earned his third win (3-3) in as many starts with five solid innings. He allowed four runs, none after the second inning, on seven hits and four walks with two strikeouts. Junior Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) came on with one out and two runners on in the bottom of the seventh and after giving up a single, notched a pair of strikeouts to earn his second save of the year.

Thompson finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored to lead the Generals. James was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and an RBI, while Stutts was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.

Senior second baseman Kevin Davis (Hanover, Va./Hanover) finished 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Yellow Jackets. First-year shortstop Ryan Hughes (Crozet, Va./Western Albermarle) was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

First-year Michael Helbig (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) started for R-MC and took the loss (2-1). He allowed seven runs (1 earned) on seven hits and one walk with one strikeout.

In the nightcap, R-MC senior Kyle Hicks (Goochland, Va./Goochland) limited W&L to just six hits (all singles) in earning the complete-game shutout as the Yellow Jackets won 10-0. He walked just one and recorded eight strikeouts to improve to 4-1 on the season.

The Yellow Jackets blew the game open with seven runs in the seventh inning, including a three-run homerun from senior third baseman Adam Carpenter (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin), to take a 10-0 lead.

Sophomore Jody Davis (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) took the loss (1-3) for W&L as he allowed three runs (1 earned) in six innings. He surrendered six hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Lewis led W&L, as he was 2-for-3 at the plate. Stutts was 1-for-3 with a stolen base and Plantholt, James and senior second baseman John Ditore (Seattle, Wash./Bishop Blanchet) all added base hits for the Generals.

Kevis Davis finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Yellow Jackets. Carpenter was 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored and junior catcher Jay Lichter (Richmond, Va./Varina) was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Bridgewater at 5:00 pm.
