Box Score 2 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team
dropped a pair of close games to Hampden-Sydney at Yank Bernier
Field on Saturday afternoon. The Generals fell, 6-4, in game one
and dropped a 3-0 decision in game two.
In game one, H-SC (13-6-1, 6-4) broke a 1-1 tie with three runs
in the third inning on RBI singles by Zach Harrelson, Ben Brawly
and Erick Herrmann to assume a 4-1 lead. The Tigers then extended
their lead to 6-1 with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Generals (9-11, 6-5) scored three runs in the seventh inning
and had the tying run at the plate, but could not find the tying
runs. Sophomore centerfielder Mike Decembrino (Yardley,
Pa./Pennsbury), senior John Ditore (Seattle, Wash./Bishop Blanchet)
and sophomore leftfielder C.J. Thompson (Ponte Vedra Beach,
Fla./Nease) all drove in a run for W&L in the inning.
Junior Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) started for
W&L and took the loss (2-1) as he allowed six runs on 11 hits
and one walk with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.
Senior third baseman Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North
Harford) led W&L with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate.
Decembrino was 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Junior
rightfielder Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill)
finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
Johnny West earned the win for H-SC as he limited the Generals
to four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
Herbie Williams led the Tigers with three hits in four at-bats
with a run scored and one driven in. Hermann finished 2-for-3 with
two RBI and a run scored, while Justin Hebert was 2-for-2 with an
RBI.
In game two, H-SC's Ryan Daniel limited W&L to just
four hits and a walk while striking out six in 6.0 shutout innings
to improve to 5-2 on the season with the 3-0 win.
Hebert hit a two-run homerun in the fourth inning to supply all
the offense the Tigers would need.
Sophomore Jody Davis (McLean, Va./Langley) started for the
Generals and took the loss as he allowed two runs on five hits and
a walk with six strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
Will Lewis double and walked in four plate appearances for the
Generals and Ditore, Decembrino, Cardona and senior first baseman
Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft) all added singles for
W&L.
W&L returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Southern
Virginia at 4:00 pm.
