Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team scored
six runs in the first two innings and never looked back in cruising
past Greensboro College, 11-4, on Thursday afternoon at Cap'n
Dick Smith Field.
The Generals (3-6) raced out to a 4-0 lead after the first
inning on RBI singles by senior first baseman Hunter Serenbetz
(Stamford, Conn./Taft) and first-year catcher Will Salley (Augusta,
Ga./Westside), as well as a two-run double off the bat of senior
third baseman Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford).
W&L extended its lead to 6-0 after the second inning as
senior designated hitter Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora)
drove in a pair of runs with a double.
Greensboro (4-10) cut the deficit to four runs (6-2) in the
fourth inning on a W&L error and a sacrifice fly by senior
rightfielder Josh Montague (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford).
However, the Generals answered with three runs in the bottom of the
frame on a Greensboro error and RBI singles by Plantholt and junior
rightfielder Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) to
go up 9-2 and coast to their third win of the season.
The Generals outhit the Pride, 13-9, and Greensboro stranded
seven runners on base.
Sophomore Jody Davis (McLean, Va./Langley) picked up the win
(1-0) for W&L, as he allowed two runs (1 earned) on five hits
and two walks with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. Davis
retired the first nine batters that he faced and did not allow a
baserunner until giving up a leadoff single to sophomore
centerfielder Matt Irwin (Asburn, Va./Stone Bridge) to start the
fourth inning.
W&L was led at the plate by Plantholt, who finished 2-for-4
with a double, three RBI and a run scored. Lewis was 3-for-4 with a
pair of doubles, a walk, two runs and two RBI, and senior second
baseman John Ditore (Seattle, Wash./Bishop Blanchet) added three
hits in four at-bats, including a double and scored three times.
Junior Michael Manfro (Fauquier, Va./Notre Dame) started for the
Pride and was saddled with the loss after allowing nine runs (8
earned) on 10 hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 3.2
innings. First-year Jacob Cadle (Denton, N.C./Westchester County)
pitched the final 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits
while striking out a pair.
At the plate, Greensboro was led by Irwin, who finished 2-for-3
and scored a run. Junior third baseman Ryan Summerford (Southern
Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) batted 2-for-4 and drove in a run.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels
to Roanoke College for a doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at
12:00 pm.
