W&L Baseball Edges Southern Virginia, 4-2

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior outfielder Robey Smalley (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Tuscaloosa Academy) went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and senior pitcher David Van Geluwe (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) pitched 5.0 scoreless innings to propel the Washington and Lee baseball team to a 4-2 victory over Southern Virginia on Wednesday at Cap'n Dick Smith field.

Van Geluwe was perfect through 4.0 innings and didn't run into any trouble until the fifth. The Knights (1-3) led off that inning with a walk, and then first-year left fielder Caleb Layden singled to left field to register SVU's first hit of the game.

Following a sacrifice bunt, the Knights had runners on second and third with one out, but Van Geluwe escaped the jam by inducing a pop out to second and a fly out to right. Van Geluwe was pulled after the inning, but gave up just one hit and one walk, while striking out three, in his 5.0 innings to move to 1-0 on the season.

The Generals (3-0) put their first run on the board in the third. With two outs, first-year third baseman Jason Volpicelli (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI Catholic) and sophomore center fielder Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) registered back-to-back singles.

Junior shortstop Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School) followed with a bouncing single to short. The SVU shortstop attempted to throw Feeley out at first, but his throw was low and got away from the first baseman. On the error, Volpicelli crossed home plate to give W&L a 1-0 advantage.

The Blue and White added three insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings. With runners on second and third with two outs in the sixth, first-year left fielder Marshall Dike (Fort Worth, Texas/Fort Worth Country Day) slapped a bloop single over the second baseman's head into right center to plate two runs (3-0). In the seventh, Smalley notched his fourth hit of the game, when he registered an RBI infield single that scored Feeley to extend the margin to 4-0.

The Knights put two runs on the board in the eighth. The first came on an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Riley Daniels, and then senior center fielder Ryan Saunders had an RBI ground out later in the frame.

SVU loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth, but junior Danny Devereux (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) struck out Daniels for the final out to tally his second save of the season. Devereux pitched the final 1.2 innings of the contest, striking out two. He improved his W&L career saves record to 15.

First-year pitcher Jonathan Soto took the loss for the Knights to fall to 1-1. He went 5.1 innings, giving up three runs with one punch out.

The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they play at Greensboro on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
