W&L Women's Soccer Begins Season with a 2-1 Win Over Elizabethtown

Box Score

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Sophomore midfielder Megan Engeland (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) scored on a penalty kick with 2:02 left in the game to help lead the Washington and Lee women's soccer team past Elizabethtown, 2-1, in the season-opener on Saturday afternoon at Haverford College.

Engeland scored the game-winning penalty kick goal for W&L (1-0) after a scrum in the box at the 87:39 mark led to a handball committed by the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown (0-1) got on the board first at the 20:03 mark, when a free kick from 30 yards out led to a scrum in front of the goal and first-year Lydia Lawson was able to find the back of the net.

The Generals tied the score right before halftime at the 42:54 mark, when a pass from first-year defender Laney Smith (Mountain Brook, Ala. / Mountain Brook) found junior midfielder Chandler Wickers (Portola Valley, Calif. / Menlo School), who placed the ball at the top left corner of the net from 25 yards out.

Despite the score remaining knotted at 1-1 for much of the second half, the Generals had several threatening opportunities, the best of which occurred at the 82:37 mark when sophomore forward Caroline Peters (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) beat her defender one-on-one and got a decent look on goal that was saved by Elizabethtown junior goalkeeper Hailey Parks. The Generals kept the pressure on and were rewarded with the penalty that resulted in the game-winner.

Washington and Lee outshot Elizabethtown, 20-4, and held a slim 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Nolan (Flanders, N.J. / Mount Olive) made three saves for the game, while Parks made eight saves for Elizabethtown.

The Generals return to action on Sunday at 1:00 pm, when they face Arcadia in the second day of the Haverford College Kick Off Classic.
