No. 9 W&L bested by No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer in PKs in NCAA Round of 16

LEXINGTON, Va. – The ninth-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team had its season come to an end on Saturday afternoon after a 0-0 draw preceded No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer advancing, 4-3, on penalty kicks.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the shootout, both sides made their first two shots heading to the third round. Seniors Bryn Bissinger and Sarah Zimmerman scored for the Generals (18-2-3), while Taylor Marshall and Sabina Peterson Rajalingam found the back of the net for the Sagehens (16-1-4).
  • In the third round, Hadley Johnson made a save on W&L sophomore Elizabeth Zimmerman, before Hannah Hong scored for a 3-2 lead through three rounds.
  • Both teams scored in the fourth round before Johnson came up with the clinching save in round five to send the Sagehens into the quarterfinal round.
  • The Generals dominated both in possession and quality chances on goal during regulation and overtime play. Senior Helen Otteni had the first good look for the Blue and White in the 18th minute but her shot banged off the left post.
  • Otteni got another look later in the game, but had a shot attempt miss just over the crossbar in the 79th minute.
  • The Sagehens finished the game with five shots on goal, all saved by sophomore Kate McEnroe with ease.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • McEnroe's five-save performance was her seventh such outing of the season to post her ninth shutout. It was also her 11th game of the season with four or more saves.
  • Johnson played all 65 minutes after halftime and made four saves to keep the Generals off the board. Patricia DePalma started and made two saves in the first half.
  • M Zimmerman led all players with six shot attempts on the day, followed by S. Zimmerman with five. Otteni and Hong were next with three shots each.
TEAM STATS:
  • The Generals outshot the Sagehens in each period on the day, outside of the second overtime (2-2). The final shot totals were 21 for the Generals and 11 for Pomona-Pitzer.
  • W&L earned eight corner kicks in the game, four in both halves of regulation. The Sagehens took their only corner of the game in the second overtime period.
END OF SEASON NOTES:
  • The Generals finish their 2025 season with the third-most wins in a season in program history (18), along with the fourth-most goals in a season in program history. They will also enter the 2026 season on a 17-game unbeaten streak, tied for fifth in program history.
  • S. Zimmerman finishes her W&L soccer career with 105 points on 42 goals and 21 assists. She is tied for fourth on the program's goals list, fifth in points and eighth in assists.
  • Bissinger closes out her collegiate career ranked in a tie for third in the program record book for career assists. Her 25 helpers are a program record for a defender.
