LEXINGTON, Va. – After having play suspended on Friday, the No. 7 Washington and Lee women's soccer team closed out a 3-1 win against William Smith on Sunday morning for a 2-0 start to the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (2-0) and Herons (2-1) played the first 24:23 of the game on Friday before severe weather caused the suspension. In that time, junior Megan Zimmerman scored twice for W&L for a 2-0 lead. Her goals came in the fourth and 19th minutes.
- The Herons nearly struck inside the first 10 seconds of the game as Grace Metzler caused a turnover atop the W&L goal box and fired a shot that needed junior Kate McEnroe to make a diving effort to keep the game scoreless at the time.
- W&L had the upper hand at the restart on Sunday with three shots on goal over the final 20:37 of the half. Antonia Goerke made all three saves, however, to keep it a two-goal game.
- The Herons found a rhythm in the second half and tacked a goal on the board in the in the 60th minute from Kristin Middaugh.
- The Generals wrapped the game up in the 76th minute when first-year Sydney Valentine netted a vital insurance goal. First-year Cara Dugan sent a cross in from the right side, as Valentine volleyed the shot inside the right post from close range.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Zimmerman's two goals led the offense for the game, and she also took six shots which were a team high. Valentine's goal was the first of her collegiate career.
- Junior Avery Hannah tallied an assist on the team's first goal, junior Elizabeth Zimmerman had the assist on the second goal and first-year Cara Dugan logged her first collegiate assist on Valentine's score. Elizabeth Zimmerman and senior Emily Burke both had four shots and three on goal.
- Middaugh scored unassisted in the 60th minute after getting a pass in the box and navigating through traffic for her shot. She led the William Smith offense with three shot attempts.
- McEnroe finished the game with three saves across the 90 minutes of play. Goerke stopped six shots, while her defense prevented an additional two W&L goals with stops on the goal line in the 63rd and 90th minutes.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- W&L claimed the lead in the all-time head-to-head against the Herons, earning their second win in three meetings. All three matchups between W&L and William Smith in women's soccer have been decided by exactly two goals.
- Head Coach Tiffany Pins is now just one win away from 200 victories in her coaching career. Pins is 199-63-40 (.725) in just over 15 seasons as a head coach, with a 67-10-13 (.817) mark in her fifth season at W&L.
TEAM STATS:
- The Generals ended the game with 21 total shots, 11 of which came in the second half. They put 11 of their attempts on goal.
- William Smith notched six shots and four on goal.
- W&L earned five corner kicks and conceded three.

The Generals are off from midweek action this week and will get back on the pitch on Saturday at No. 25 Christopher Newport in a 12:00 p.m. start.
