NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Washington and Lee Head Women's Soccer Coach
Tiffany Pins earned her 200th career coaching victory on Saturday, as the seventh-ranked Generals downed No. 25 Christopher Newport, 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior Elizabeth Zimmerman gave the Generals (3-0) the only goal they needed in the 15th minute. It came after a run up the right side from junior Aubrey Dunbar, who went around a defender before centering a pass. Zimmerman then took one touch to settle and used her next touch to fire a shot just off the right post and in.
- W&L controlled the offensive chances in the first half with 12 shot attempts to just one from the Captains (2-1-1). The Generals kept CNU goalie Amy Sidaway busy in the first 45 minutes, forcing her to make six saves.
- The Captains found more of a rhythm on offense in the second half but still could not manage to dent the scoreboard. Saves from junior goalie Kate McEnroe in the 52nd and 74th minutes allowed the Blue and White to secure the win.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Zimmerman scored her second goal of the season on Saturday and moved up to six points on the year as well. Dunbar was credited with her second assist of the season, tied for the team lead with Zimmerman and junior Avery Hannah.
- Juniors Megan Zimmerman and Maren Brown both took four shots and put two on goal to lead W&L. Senior Emily Burke finished with three shots and also put two on target.
- Caelyn LaFlamme paced the CNU offense with three shots in the game. Ellie Diehl and Avery Spell had one shot on goal apiece.
- McEnroe ended the day with two saves to record her first clean sheet of the season and the 10th of her career. Sidaway finished with eight saves in the Captains' goal.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Pins' 200th career win comes in just her 303rd career game, as she owns a coaching record of 200-63-40 (.726), including 68-10-13 (.819) at W&L.
- The Generals handed the Captains a rare home loss, as it was CNU's third loss on the home pitch since the beginning of the 2021 season.
- Saturday's result broke a string of three straight draws between the Generals and Captains. W&L improved to 3-0-4 all-time against CNU.
TEAM STATS:
- The Generals owned the shot advantage in the game by a final of 17-8. They also put 10 shots on goal compared to two for the Captains.
- W&L took nine corner kicks in the game, including seven in the first half, while conceding three.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will be back in action next Saturday, September 19, when they host York (Pa.) at 1:00 p.m. Prior to opening kick-off, Senior Day festivities will take place to honor the program's eight seniors.
