LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior
Emily Burke scored the first and third goals to highlight the No. 3 Washington and Lee women's soccer team's 3-0 win on Senior Day over York (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (4-0) had the upper hand in overall pressure in the early going, with three shots and just one against them in the opening 25 minutes.
- In the 30th minute, junior Elizabeth Zimmerman played a pass back to junior Maren Brown, who one-timed a pass upfield towards Burke. Burke then beat the last defender and had a breakaway on goal before scoring for the team's opening goal.
- The game remained a 1-0 W&L advantage well into the second half, thanks in part to junior goalie Kate McEnroe who made a pair of tough saves. Arguably her top save of the day came in the 49th minute when York's (4-1-2) Carissa Baugus tried her luck from just outside the box, but McEnroe leapt and guided the ball over the crossbar.
- Junior Megan Zimmerman gave the Generals a big insurance goal in the 75th minute, scoring on a header from a corner kick taken by senior Stephanie Zawtocki. Zimmerman then added an assist when she found Burke in the 80th minute to put a stamp on the win.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Burke notched her second career brace and paced the Generals' offense with six shots. M. Zimmerman had a goal and an assist, while E. Zimmerman, Brown and Zawtocki each had one assist.
- M. Zimmerman followed Burke in shot attempts with five, as the two combined for 11 of the team's 21 total attempts.
- Meg Kalthof led the York offense with three shot attempts and two on goal.
- McEnroe finished the day with five saves to secure her second shutout of the season. Gracie Leathery played all 90 minutes in the York goal and made four saves.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Saturday's win was the fourth straight for the Generals and helped extend their unbeaten streak to 21 games (19-0-2). They are now tied with the 2024 team (20-0-1) for the longest unbeaten streak in program history.
- The Generals are also now unbeaten in their last 37 games on Watt Field, winning 31 of those games with six draws.
TEAM STATS:
- The Generals finished the game outshooting the Spartans 21-6, which included a 15-3 advantage in the second half. Seven of W&L's shots finished on frame compared to five for York.
- The Blue and White also bested the Green and White in corner kicks, 14-5, with 11 of their corner kicks coming in the second half.
