SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The No. 2 Washington and Lee women's soccer team opened ODAC play with an 11-0 win at Sweet Briar on Tuesday to extend its undefeated streak to a program-record 22 games in a row.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (5-0) scored six goals in the first half, starting with scores from senior Emily Burke and first-year Sydney Valentine in the ninth minute just 29 seconds apart. Junior Megan Zimmerman had the assist on Burke's goal.
- First-year Molly Brown had the next tally for the Blue and White in the 28th minute, before the final three goals of the half came in the last five minutes from first-year Caroline Brandt (40:01) and sophomores Quincy Greene (42:10) and Annelies Brenenborg (44:56).
- The Generals quickly added their seventh and eighth goals coming out of halftime from Burke (45:36) and Valentine (47:54), before Greene notched her second goal of the game in the 60th minute.
- Sophomore McKenna Reh put W&L into double digits in the 68th minute and Brown added her second goal of the game in the 73rd minute to round out the scoring.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Burke, Valentine, Brown and Greene led the W&L offense with two goals each, while senior Abigail Watson tallied a team-high two assists.
- Zimmerman, junior Avery Hannah and first-year Liza Cathey had one assist each to wrap up the goal contributors.
- Brown had a W&L-high five shots, all of which finished on goal, while six additional players had three shots each.
- Junior Kate McEnroe and sophomore Chrysi Gabriel shared the shutout in goal for the Generals. McEnroe played the first half and did not face a shot, while Gabriel made two saves in the second half to keep the Vixens off the board.
- Arianna Nguyen saw plenty of action in her 78:36 in the Sweet Briar goal. She finished the night with 20 saves.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Generals surpassed the program record for longest unbeaten streak on Tuesday night. The 2024 team put together a 20-0-1 stretch in the middle of the season, while the program's current streak is now at 22 games on a record of 20-0-2.
- W&L also extended its ODAC winning streak to 23 consecutive games with Tuesday's victory, extending a run that dates back to the 2023 season.
TEAM STATS:
- The Generals outshot the Vixens 42-3 on the night, including 23-0 in the first half. W&L put 32 of its shots on goal to two from the hosts.
- W&L took eight corner kicks in the game, six in the first half, and conceded two.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will be back in action on Wednesday for their first home ODAC game of the season, hosting Guilford at 6:00 p.m.
