LEXINGTON, Va. – The second-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team improved to 2-0 in ODAC play for the season on Wednesday night behind a 1-0 victory over Guilford.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior Megan Zimmerman tallied the lone goal of the game in the 12th minute, as she finished a cross played into the box from junior Avery Hannah. Zimmerman got enough power on the ball and slotted it just inside the right post.
- The Generals (6-0, 2-0 ODAC) controlled the pace of play for the entirety of the game, seldom allowing the Quakers (1-3-3, 0-1-0 ODAC) possession of the ball inside their defensive half.
- The Quakers remained in the game behind the superb play of goalie Madison Motto. Motto positioned herself well throughout the game to stop several shots, and also had a handful of acrobatic saves. She saved six shots in the first half and eight in the second half.
- Arguably the closest the Generals came to adding a second goal came in the 82nd minute, but a shot from junior Elizabeth Zimmerman from the top of the box banged off the left post.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- M. Zimmerman's goal was her team-leading sixth of the season, while Hannah got her team-best fourth assist of the year. First-year Sydney Valentine also got an assist on the goal as she fed Hannah into space for her cross to Zimmerman.
- The Zimmerman sisters led the Generals in total shot attempts with nine each and five on goal combined. Senior Emily Burke took five shots and first-year Molly Brown had four attempts coming off the bench.
- Between the W&L offense maintaining strong possession and the defense thwarting any Guilford offensive threats, the Quakers did not record a shot attempt in the game.
- Motto ended the game with 14 saves in the Guilford goal, while junior Kate McEnroe tallied her third clean sheet of the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- After setting the program record for longest unbeaten streak last night, the Generals extended that mark to 23 games (21-0-2) on Wednesday night. It was also the program's 24th consecutive ODAC win and 38th straight home game without a loss (32-0-6).
- The Generals improved to 36-0-5 all-time against Guilford. It was their 12th straight win against the Quakers and their 15th straight shutout.
- McEnroe extended her consecutive shutout minutes streak to 345:08, while W&L has not allowed a goal in the last 390:08. The Generals have conceded just one goal this season, shutting out five of their six opponents.
TEAM STATS:
- W&L finished the game with 39 shot attempts and put 15 on goal. They got 20 shots off in the first half and 19 in the second half.
- The Generals also shut out the Quakers in corner kicks while taking 16 themselves.

The Generals will play in their third game of the week on Saturday when they travel to Randolph for a 1:00 p.m. opening kick.
