Megan Zimmerman both scored twice to highlight the No. 2 Washington and Lee women's soccer team's 6-0 win at Randolph on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (7-0, 3-0 ODAC) needed some time to settle in for the game, but once they did, the Zimmerman sisters scored a pair of goals in quick succession for a 2-0 lead. Megan scored on a penalty kick in the 34th minute, before Elizabeth scored just over two minutes later.
- Megan Zimmerman added her second goal of the game in the 52nd minute when Elizabeth Zimmerman sent a corner kick into the middle of the box. Megan got her head to the ball and finished the scoring chance for the 3-0 lead.
- Senior Stephanie Zawtocki added the team's fourth goal on an assist from first-year Alex Van Arsdale in the 63rd minute, before Watson put a stamp on the victory in the 72nd and 88th minutes. Watson first scored on a penalty before finding the back of the net on a free kick.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- M. Zimmerman tallied her seventh and eighth goals of the season on Saturday to extend her team lead, while Watson got on the scoresheet for her second and third scores of the year. It also marked Watson's first career brace.
- E. Zimmerman scored her third goal of the year and logged her team-best fourth assist of the season, while Zawtocki and Van Arsdale both recorded their second assists.
- Junior Kate McEnroe and sophomore Chrysi Gabriel shared the team shutout in the W&L goal. McEnroe made one save in 70:34 of action before Gabriel covered the final 19:26. The W&L defense allowed just one shot on goal all game.
- Kacie Walker and Abby Gilbert split time in the Randolph goal. Both allowed three goals and made four saves.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Saturday's result helped the Generals extend both of their winning or unbeaten streaks. It was their 25th straight ODAC win and 24th straight game without a loss (22-0-2).
- M. Zimmerman has already matched her single-season career high in goals in just seven games played this season. She also scored eight times during her ODAC Rookie of the Year run in 2024.
- With a 7-0 record, the Generals are off to the best start to a traditional fall season since 1997 when that team opened with a 10-0 record. The seven straight wins are tied with the 1996 team for third-longest winning streak to begin a season in program history.
TEAM STATS:
- The Generals outshot the WildCats 36-4 in the game, including 24-2 in the second half. Fourteen of the Generals' shots ended up on goal.
- W&L also held a sizable margin in corner kicks, conceding one and taking 13.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Averett University for a 4:00 p.m. start.
