DANVILLE, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's soccer team ran its perfect start to an eighth game on Wednesday with a 9-0 win at Averett, which included seven goals in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (8-0, 4-0 ODAC) scored both of their first-half goals inside the first five minutes of play. Junior Megan Zimmerman scored a penalty kick in the first minute, before she assisted senior Emily Burke in the fifth minute.
- W&L scored its third goal inside the first minute of the second half, as Zimmerman got her second assist of the game to sister Elizabeth Zimmerman. Just under 90 seconds later, Burke made it a 4-0 W&L lead.
- Junior Maren Brown (63') and sophomore McKenna Reh (64') scored 67 seconds apart to push the W&L lead to six, before sophomore Annelies Brenenborg got on the board in the 71st minute.
- First-year Caroline Brandt scored in the 80th minute on a centering feed from sophomore Julia Espinosa, before Espinosa put the finishing touches on the 9-0 win with a goal in the 84th minute.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Burke and M. Zimmerman tallied a W&L-high four points, with Burke scoring twice and Zimmerman having a goal and two assists. Espinosa joined in with multiple goal contributions with her goal and assist.
- Other players to record an assist for the Generals included senior Gracie Jorgensen and junior Millie Rush. In total, 10 different players recorded at least one point for the Generals.
- Junior Kate McEnroe and sophomore Chrysi Gabriel shared the team shutout. They did not face any shots in the game thanks to strong play from both their offense and defense.
- Krista Hinebaugh made 10 saves in goal for the Cougars in the losing effort, nine of which came in the first half.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Generals have still only allowed one goal this season and none in the last 566:22. McEnroe has a personal consecutive shutout minutes streak of 469:22 now.
- W&L extended its ODAC winning streak to 26 straight games and its overall unbeaten streak to 25 games (23-0-2).
- After Wednesday's strong performance, M. Zimmerman set new single-season career highs for points (22) and goals (9), surpassing her rookie season totals.
TEAM STATS:
- The Generals outshot the Cougars, 40-0, in the game, with 20 shots on goal. They took 23 shots in the first half and 17 in the second half.
- The Blue and White took 10 of their 12 corner kicks for the game in the first half.

The Generals will return home for their next game, as they host Lynchburg at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
