Wasson Propels W&L Baseball to 9-3 Win at Bridgewater

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team scored seven runs in the final four innings to earn a 9-3 victory at Bridgewater on Wednesday.

Each team scored two runs in the fourth inning, but the Generals (20-9, 8-4) grabbed the lead for good in the top of the sixth. With runners on first and third and one out, sophomore shortstop Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) reached on an error and first-year designated hitter Scott Simmons (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Academy) scored (3-2) on the play. Following a sacrifice bunt, junior outfielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) hit a two-run single to left to stretch the lead to 6-2.

The Blue and White notched two more tallies in the eighth on a two-run triple by Wasson to push the advantage to 8-2. The Eagles (16-10, 7-4 ODAC) got one run back in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single by senior first baseman Brendan Howell, but W&L recorded the final run of the game on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Cory Paton (Ashton, Md./St. Johns College) in the ninth.

Senior starter Kyle Tipping (Green Lane, Pa./The Hill School) threw 7.0 innings to earn the victory. He gave up two unearned runs on four hits and three walks. Tipping improved to 4-2 on the year. Sophomore Ian Mayes (1-2) came on in relief for Bridgewater and suffered the loss. He allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits in 2.2 innings.

Wasson finished the game 2-for-6 with a triple, four RBI and a run scored. Simmons was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs.

W&L has now won six straight contests, which is its longest winning streak of the season. The 20 wins are the most for the Blue and White since the team won 22 games in 2009. The Generals are also one victory away from the 1,000th in program history.

W&L returns to action on Saturday at Roanoke for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm.
