HARRISONBURG, Va. — Eastern Mennonite senior pitcher Ryan Henschel held the Washington and Lee baseball team to just five hits in 8.1 innings, as the Royals shut out the Generals, 3-0, on Wednesday at the EMU Baseball Field.

Henschel (2-1) subdued the W&L (6-9, 4-7 ODAC) offense through eight innings, but the Blue and White attempted a rally in the top of the ninth. With one out, junior center fielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) singled down the right field line. Sophomore pinch hitter Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) followed with a single up the middle to put runners on first and second with one out.

EMU (11-10, 5-6 ODAC) brought in junior Aaron Hooven who forced senior left fielder Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) to line into a game-ending double play. It marked the first save of the season for Hooven.

The Royals scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sophomore designated hitter Ryan Hedrick led off with a single, and then senior shortstop Justin Rodriguez laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Hedrick to second.

After a ground out, sophomore left fielder Kyle Mathews was hit by a pitch. Junior first baseman Nic Love brought home the first run of the game on a single to left, and then junior second baseman Patrick Love pushed the score to 3-0 on a two-run triple to center.

Senior Andrew Lamb (Lexington, S.C./Hammond) took the loss for W&L to fall to 0-2. He gave up three runs on four hits in 3.0 innings of relief. Sophomore Tom Concklin (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), junior Kyle Tipping (Green Lane, Pa./The Hill School) and senior Cory Smith (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) combined to pitch 5.0 scoreless innings, giving up three hits.

The Generals next travel to Emory & Henry on Saturday for a doubleheader, starting at 12:00 pm.
