W&L Baseball Scores 20 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep at Guilford

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Washington and Lee baseball team's offense erupted for 20 combined runs in a doubleheader sweep at Guilford on Saturday.

The Generals (5-5, 3-3 ODAC) jumped out to a 5-1 lead and held on for a 10-5 victory in game one, and then used a six-run sixth inning to win game two, 10-2.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second inning of the first game, a two-run double by sophomore catcher Cory Paton (Ashton, Md./St. Johns College) gave W&L a 2-1 lead. Junior center fielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) hit a sacrifice fly to center to push the advantage to 3-1.

The Blue and White added two more runs in the fifth. Myer scored on a wild pitch, and then senior left fielder Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) hit a RBI single to center to stretch the lead to 5-1.

The Quakers (5-14, 2-8 ODAC) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to trim the deficit to 5-3, but first-year right fielder Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) responded with a solo homer in the top of the seventh. It marked the first collegiate home run for Ruedisili and was the first home run of the season by the Generals.

Guilford added a run in the bottom of the seventh, but W&L outscored the Quakers, 4-1, in the eighth and the ninth to reach the final margin. Sophomore Tom Concklin (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) earned the victory for the Generals to improve to 2-1. He pitched 5.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits. Sophomore Chase Shuford (1-5) suffered the loss, giving up five runs on six hits in 6.0 innings.

The Quakers plated the first two runs of game two on a RBI single by junior first baseman Charles Noble in the first and a sacrifice fly by junior second baseman Kyle Humphrey in the fifth. Facing a 2-0 deficit, W&L scored six runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-2 lead.

The Generals loaded the bases without recording an out to start the inning, and then senior shortstop Taylor Rowe (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Junior catcher Riley Stout (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) followed with a RBI groundout, and then Weprinsky roped a one-run double down the right field line.

Sophomore third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) scored Stout and Weprinsky with a double down the left field line, and sophomore first baseman Johnny Swenson (Newnan, Ga./Newnan) capped the six-run sixth with a RBI single up the middle.

W&L scored its final four runs in the top of the seventh. Rowe had a RBI single to right field, Weston recorded a two-run triple and Swenson registered a sacrifice fly.

Junior Kyle Tipping (Green Lane, Pa./The Hill School) tossed 6.0 innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits to secure his first win (1-1) of the year. He also had four strikeouts. Senior Drew Shott (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) threw the final 3.0 innings to record his first collegiate save. He did not allow a run on three hits, while striking out three.

Sophomore John Todd (0-5) took the loss for Guilford, pitching 6.0 innings. He gave up seven earned runs on nine hits.

Weston went 4-for-10 with three doubles and a triple over the course of the doubleheader. He also notched four runs and four RBI. Ruedisili also finished the day 4-for-10 with a home run, a triple and two RBI. Weprinsky had the most hits for the team, ending the day 5-for-9.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they host Bridgewater for a 3:00 pm contest.
