W&L Baseball Drops Two Games to No. 22 R-MC, 8-3 and 16-1

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. — The 22nd-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team scored a combined 24 runs in sweeping a doubleheader against Washington and Lee on Sunday at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.

The Yellow Jackets (11-1, 5-1 ODAC) held the Generals (3-3, 1-2 ODAC) to just three hits in winning game one, 8-3, and then R-MC used a five-run second inning and a six-run seventh to take the second contest, 16-1.

W&L scored its first run of game one in the top of the second inning without recording a hit. Junior catcher Riley Stout (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) opened the inning with a walk, and then sophomore third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) and sophomore right fielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) each reached on an error to load the bases.

With junior designated hitter Michael DeMatteis (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) at the plate, Stout came home on a wild pitch. The Yellow Jackets' junior James Walsh escaped the jam by striking out three straight Generals. Walsh finished the game with 13 strikeouts. R-MC claimed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, when sophomore third baseman Stuart Brown and junior designated hitter Travis Lodge each scored on a two-out error by Wasson.

The Yellow Jackets added three more runs in the fourth and another two in the sixth to stretch their advantage to 7-1. Stout recorded the Blue and White's first hit of the game in the seventh, and would eventually score on an error to trim the deficit to 7-2. Each team would score one more run to reach the final margin.

Walsh (2-0) earned the victory for Randolph-Macon, throwing 7.0 innings. He allowed just one hit and two unearned runs to go along with his 13 strikeouts. Sophomore Tom Concklin (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) suffered the loss for W&L to fall to 1-1. He pitched 5.0 innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on 10 hits.

The Yellow Jackets held a 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the second inning in game two. R-MC loaded the bases with one out and then junior catcher Mitch Keeler was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Following a pitching change, Lodge reached on a fielder's choice to plate junior outfielder Christian Sanderson, and first-year first baseman Bryan Migliorini brought home the final two runs of the inning on a two-run double to center.

The Generals would score their only run of the game in the top of the third on a RBI double by junior outfielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy). The Yellow Jackets added two runs in fifth and the sixth, and then put the game out of reach with six runs in the bottom of the seventh.

First-year Rick Spiers (4-0) went 7.0 innings to pick up the victory. He gave up one unearned run on four hits, while striking out six. Senior Drew Shott (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) suffered the loss to drop to 1-1. He pitched 1.1 innings and gave up five runs on one hit and four walks.

The Generals return to action on Tuesday when they travel to 12th-ranked Shenandoah for a 3:30 pm contest.
