Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Bridgewater College tallied eight runs in
the top of the first inning, then kept the Washington and Lee
baseball team at bay the remainder of the game in pulling out a
16-8 win over the Generals at Cap'n Dick Smith Field on
Tuesday evening.
The first seven BC (17-12, 12-2) batters reached base to start
the game and the Eagles sent 12 men to the plate in the opening
inning to take an 8-0 lead. Bridgewater's offense kept
rolling in the second inning as the Eagles tallied three more runs
to assume an 11-0 lead after just one and a half innings.
W&L (11-14, 7-8) got on the board with single runs in the
second, third and fourth innings on a sacrifice fly by senior third
baseman Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford), an RBI
single by senior catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) and
an RBI double off the bat of sophomore designated hitter Alston
James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond).
Following a mammoth two-run homerun from BC senior rightfielder
Andy Chrismer (Gettysburg, Pa./Littlwtown) in the top of the fifth
that made the score 13-3, W&L tallied four runs in the bottom
of the fifth, including a two-run homerun by Plantholt, to creep
within six runs (13-7).
However, the Eagles tacked on a single run in the seventh and a
pair of runs in the eighth to preserve the win.
Senior Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) started on two
days rest for the Generals and allowed six runs on five hits and
one walk and did not retire a batter to slip to 3-4 on the season.
Plantholt led W&L at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI
and a pair of runs scored. Senior first baseman Hunter Serenbetz
(Stamford, Conn./Taft) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs
scored, while Lewis was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore Kevin Chandler (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg)
started for Bridgewater and earned the win as he surrendered seven
runs (6 earned) on eight hits, one walk and two strikeouts in 5.0
innings.
Senior centerfielder Drew Easter (Broadway, Va./Broadway) and
junior third baseman Brett Howell (Manassas, Va./Osburn) led the BC
hit parade with four hits apiece. Easter added a double, two RBI
and a pair of runs, while Howell drove in three runs and scored
twice. First-year leftfielder Jonathan Mason (Sterling, Va./Park
View) finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two driven in and
sophomore catcher Devon Snow (Manassas, Va./Osburn) added three
runs scored.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they host
Eastern Mennonite at 5:00 pm.
