Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan swept an afternoon
doubleheader from the Washington and Lee baseball team on Saturday
afternoon at Marlins Field. W&L dropped game one, 1-0, and
fell, 7-1, in the nightcap.
W&L (12-16, 8-10) senior
Chuck Davidson (Winnetka,
Ill./New Trier) was a hard-luck loser in game one as he allowed
just one run on two hits with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings to
fall to 3-5 on the season. VWC (22-13, 13-5) tallied its lone run
in the second inning on a walk, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single
to eke out the win.
Senior catcher
Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) was 2-for-3
at the plate for the Generals and sophomore leftfielder C.J.
Thompson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) was for 1-for-2.
In game two, sophomore
Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid
Jesuit) allowed four runs on two hits and four walks in 2.0 innings
of work in suffering his first loss (4-1) of the year. Junior Gregg
Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) allowed one run on two hits with
five strikeouts in 5.0 innings of relief.
At the plate, the Generals were led by first-year outfielder George
Youmans (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian), who finished
2-for-4 with a double. First-year shortstop
Jonathan Stutts
(Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) was 2-for-3 with a double
and run scored and senior second baseman
John Ditore (Seattle,
Wash./Bishop Blanchet) was 2-for-5 with a double.
The Generals return to action on Thursday when they participate in
the first round of the ODAC Tournament. W&L will be the No. 6
seed and will take on the top seed (which has yet to be determined)
at a time yet to be determined.
