Box Score 2 LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team continued
its strong offensive play of late with a doubleheader sweep of
Emory & Henry on Wednesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith
Field. W&L won game one, 18-6, and took game two by a 7-1
score.
The Generals (9-9, 6-3) scored 14 runs over game one's
first four innings in running away with the 12-run victory. Nine
different players recorded at least one hit and nine different
players drove in at least one run.
Senior first baseman Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft)
started things off with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the
first inning to give the Generals a 2-0 lead. The lead swelled to
8-0 as W&L tacked on six runs in the second inning, including
an RBI double from sophomore leftfielder C.J. Thompson (Ponte Vedra
Beach, Fla./Nease) and a solo homerun from sophomore designated
hitter Alston James (Columbia, S.C/Hammond).
E&H (1-9, 0-6) dented the scoreboard with a single run in
the third inning on an RBI double by senior centerfielder Anthony
Lowry (Covington, Va./Alleghany), but the Generals scored four more
times in both the fourth and sixth innings to put the contest away.
Senior Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) started for
W&L and picked up his first win of the season (1-3). He allowed
five runs (4 earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts in 5.0
innings. First-year Jacob Pelton (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello)
pitched the final two innings in relief.
Serenbetz led the offensive charge as he collected two hits in
four at-bats, drove in three runs and scored twice. Senior catcher
Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) was a perfect 4-for-4 with
two RBI and two runs. First-year shortstop Jonathan Stutts
(Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) was 3-for-5 with three RBI,
while sophomore centerfielder Mike Decembrino (Yardley,
Pa./Pennsbury) was also 3-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBI and
a stolen base. Thompson finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs
scored.
Lowry finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI for E&H. Senior
third baseman Codie Mitchell (Linville, Va./Broadway) had two hits
in four at-bats and scored three times and junior leftfielder
Remington Hedgepeth (Winston-Salem, N.C./Wingate) was 2-for-4 with
three RBI.
In the nightcap, W&L sophomore Roger Strong (Spencerport,
N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) limited the Wasps to one unearned run over 6.0
innings in improving to 3-0 on the season, as W&L cruised to a
7-1 win. He surrendered seven hits and one walk and struck out
five.
With a 6-1 lead, Strong loaded the bases with no outs to start
the seventh, but first-year Eric Wisotsky (West Windsor,
N.J./Plainsboro North) came in and retired the first three batters
that he faced to get out of the inning.
With the score tied 1-1 in the third inning, W&L took a 4-1
lead on an RBI single from James and a fielding error by E&H
that allowed two runs to score. The Generals extended their lead to
6-1 when Thompson drove in a pair of runs with a double in the
sixth inning and another James RBI single capped the scoring in the
seventh.
James was a perfect 2-for-2 with a pair of walks at the plate.
He also drove in a pair of runs and scored twice. Decembrino
finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and Thompson added
a pair of runs driven in.
The Wasps were led by first-year leftfielder Eric Houff
(Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg), who finished 2-for-4 and Mitchell
drove in the Wasps' lone run .
Junior Jared Surber (Chilhowie, Va./Chilhowie) took the loss for
the Wasps, as he allowed four runs (2 earned) on six hits and one
walk with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.
W&L returns to action on Saturday as it travels to
Hampden-Sydney for an ODAC-doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
