Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team
outlasted No. 20 Shenandoah, 16-11, in a game that featured 16
errors on Tuesday evening at Bridgeforth Field.
Aided by four Shenandoah errors in the third inning, the
Generals took a 6-1 lead that they would never relinquish with five
runs in the third, capped by a three-run homerun from first-year
catcher Luke Deary (Carlisle, Mass./Groton School). Senior first
baseman Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft) added an RBI in the
inning as well.
W&L (7-9) added three runs in the fourth and two more in the
fifth to assume an 11-4 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth.
However, the Hornets (16-5) came back with five runs over the next
two innings to creep within three runs (11-8), before the Generals
tallied four runs in the seventh, including a two-run single by
Serenbetz, and a final tally in the eighth to secure the victory.
Serenbetz finished 2-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Senior designated hitter Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora)
also had three hits, while driving in three runs and scoring two
times. Senior third baseman Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North
Harford) and Deary each added three RBI. First-year shortstop
Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) had three
hits in five at-bats and stole two bases and senior second baseman
John Ditore (Seattle, Wash./Bishop Blanchet) scored four times.
First-year James Dillard (Cos Cob, Conn./Blair Academy) picked
up the win (1-1) as he allowed six runs on six hits and a walk with
two strikeouts in four innings of relief.
Sophomore Matt Griffin took the loss for SU. He allowed seven
runs (1 earned) on five hits with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings
of work.
Senior Jesse Henry led the Hornets with four hits in six
at-bats, while driving in one run and scoring twice. Junior first
baseman Greg Van Sickler finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs
scored, while senior third baseman Scott Van Dusseldorp homered and
drove in a pair of runs.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts
Emory & Henry in a doubleheader at Cap'n DIck Smith Field
at 3:00 pm.
