DEMOREST, Ga. -- Piedmont College scored six
unanswered runs after falling behind 3-0 to knock off the
Washington and Lee baseball team, 6-3, on Wednesday afternoon at
Loudermilk Field.
The Generals (0-4) took a 2-0 lead in the top
of the first inning when senior first baseman Hunter Serenbetz
(Stamford, Conn./Taft) hit a two run single that scored junior
rightfielder Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) and
senior catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora).
W&L tacked on another run in the second
inning to go up 3-0 when first-year shortstop Jonathan Stutts
(Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) hit a sacrifice fly to
right to bring home sophomore leftfielder C.J. Thompson (Ponte
Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease).
Piedmont (4-5) tallied single runs in the
third and fourth innings and finally pulled ahead with a pair of
runs in the fifth and the Lions added two more runs in the sixth
inning to send the Generals to their fourth loss to start the
season.
Serenbetz, Lewis and Stutts all finished the
day 1-for-3 at the plate, with Serenbetz driving in two runs and
Stutts adding one RBI. Thompson was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run
scored.
Senior righthander Nate Adkins (Ravenswood, W.
Va./Ravenswood) started for the Generals and allowed four funs on
four hits with four walks and a strikeout in 5.0 innings in taking
the loss (0-1).
For the Lions, senior centerfielder Corey
Lindsey finished 1-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, an RBI
and two stolen bases. Sophomore shortstop Scott Haddock was 2-for-3
with two runs scored and senior designated hitter Kevin McConnell
added two RBI.
Sophomore Alex Beebe picked up the win (1-1)
with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed three hits and two
walks with one strikeout. Junior Matt Collins nailed down the win
with a scoreless ninth.
W&L is set to return to action on Saturday
when it hosts Emory & Henry in a doubleheader beginning at
12:00 pm.
