ATLANTA, Ga. -- Emory University tallied five
runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Washington
and Lee baseball team, 8-5, on Tuesday afternoon at Chappell Park.
Emory (2-4), jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the
first inning before W&L (0-3) plated a pair of runs in the top
of the second inning on a two-out, two-run double off the bat of
junior rightfielder Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut
Hill) to knot the game at 2-2.
Trailing 3-2 in the sixth inning, Cardona
drove in first-year shortstop Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte,
N.C./Charlotte Country Day) with a single to left field to once
again pull W&L even at 3-3.
The Generals took their first lead of the
contest, 5-3, in the top of the eighth inning as Cardona drove in
his fourth run of the game with a double to right-center that
scored senior second baseman John Ditore (Seattle, Wash./Bishop
Blanchet). Senior catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora)
followed with a single that scored Cardona and gave the Generals a
two-run lead.
However, in the bottom half of the inning, the
Eagles rallied for five runs to account for the final score of 8-5.
Emory sent 10 batters to the plate in the eighth inning and W&L
used three different pitchers in the inning.
Cardona finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate
with four RBI and two doubles. His four RBI tied a career high.
Lewis finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a run driven in and Ditore
was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Junior righthander Gregg Laswell (Houston,
Texas/Memorial) started for the Generals and earned a no-decision.
He allowed three runs on six hit and four walks, while striking out
five in 5.0 innings. First-year righthander Joe Scalzo (Ridgefield,
Conn./Brunswick) allowed three runs in over a third of an inning
and took the loss (0-1).
Jonathan Reilly and Patrick Riebsame both went
2-for-4 at the plate and scored a run to lead the Eagles. Riebsame
drove in two runs, while Reilly had one RBI. Marc Terranova started
for the Eagles and allowed two runs on three hits and four walks
with three strikeouts in 3.0 innings. Zeb Heidt picked up the win
(1-0), as he tossed 1.2 innings of hitless relief. He walked one
and struck out one.
W&L returns to action on Wednesday as it
takes on Piedmont at 3:00 pm.
