Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's
basketball team led for just 2:40 of the game's 40 minutes,
but emerged with a 73-70 victory over Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday
evening at Yoder Arena.
Despite shooting 60.0 percent (15-25) from the floor in the
opening half, the Generals (14-8, 13-5) led for just 42 seconds of
the opening period and trailed the Royals (15-8, 11-8) by a score
of 39-34 at the halftime break.
EMU, which shot 63.6 percent (14-22) from the floor in the
second half, used a 7-2 spurt at the beginning of the frame to
assume a 10-point lead (46-36) with 17:28 left. EMU maintained an
11-point lead (63-52) with 9:53 left in the game, but W&L used
a 14-4 run, keyed by six points from junior forward Felice Herman
(Fairfield, Pa./Delone Catholic), to assume a 70-69 lead with 2:31
to play. It was the Generals' first lead since the 3:33 mark
of the first half.
The Royals knotted the game at 70-70 as senior guard Melissa
Lewis made 1-of-2 free throws with 2:03 remaining in the contest.
However, W&L took the lead for good just 33 seconds later as
Herman nailed a layup for a 72-70 advantage at the 1:30 mark. EMU
had a chance to tie it at 72-all with under 20 seconds remaining,
but first-year guard Katy Wilson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor)
recorded a steal with 16 seconds left and the Royals had to foul
five times in order to send the Generals to the free throw line.
Sophomore guard Meg Ingram (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) hit 1-of-2
from the stripe with seven seconds left and an Eastern Mennonite
three-pointer at the buzzer would not fall as W&L escaped with
the win.
Washington and Lee cooled off to shoot just 42.9 percent (15-35)
in the second half (30-for-60 for the game, .500), but outrebounded
the Royals, 22-9, in the second stanza led by Wilson, who had eight
second half rebounds, including seven offensive boards. She
finished with four points, eight rebounds and two steals. Ingram
tallied 19 points and six assists, while Herman notched 18 points
on 9-of-13 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds. Sophomore forward
Becca Bolton (Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham Central) totaled 13 points
(6-8 shooting) and seven rebounds, while sophomore forward Kari Ann
Pfannenstein (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) chipped in 11 points.
First-year forward Sara Lamneck paced EMU with 16 points and
eight rebounds. First-year guard Danielle Rittenhouse registered 13
points, while junior guard Addie Bashorun and senior guard Ebony
Dennis added 11 points each.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday as it hosts
Roanoke College for a 7:00 pm contest.
