LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee scored four
second-half goals, including a pair by senior midfielder Maggie
Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy), to produce a 4-0
victory over Christopher Newport in the opening round of the NCAA
Division III Women's Soccer Tournament on Saturday afternoon
at Watt Field.
The Generals (17-1-3) outshot the Captains (12-8-3) by a count of
9-1 in the opening 45 minutes, but CNU senior goalkeeper Dineen
Sampson (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) made several outstanding
saves in the first half to send the teams scoreless into the
halftime break.
Sutherland gave W&L a 1-0 lead at 56:04 when she headed in a
corner kick by sophomore defender Page Minton (Bowling Green,
Ky./Bowling Green). She then scored off another Minton corner just
4:10 later for a 2-0 lead. First-year midfielder Ainsley Daigle
(Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana) added another tally
off a penalty kick in the 67th minute, and first-year forward Katie
Howard (Atherton, Calif./Menlo School) capped the scoring when she
found the net off a feed from first-year defender Alex Todd (New
Orleans, La./Isidore Newman) in the 89th minute.
For the game, Washington and Lee held advantages of 16-5 in shots
and 8-0 in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Leary
(Cincinnati, Ohio/King's) played all 90 minutes in net for
the Generals, posting two saves.
Sampson also played the duration in goal for Christopher Newport,
notching five saves. The Captains also received a fine defensive
save from junior midfielder Megan Conheeney (Ridgewood,
N.J./Ridgewood).
Washington and Lee advances to the second round on Sunday, when it
will face Lynchburg College in a 1:00 pm contest.
