Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 2 W&L and No. 18 Batten play to 1-1 draw

LEXINGTON, Va. – The second-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team posted a draw for the second straight home game, as Saturday's ODAC contest against No. 18 Batten University finished at 1-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Generals (11-0-2, 6-0-1 ODAC) dented the scoreboard first, as junior Elizabeth Zimmerman found junior Maren Brown on a centering feed in the 35th minute. Brown hit a one-time volley from close range and buried the shot into the back of the net at the near post.
  • The game was equalized in the 77th minute after the Marlins (10-0-4, 5-0-2 ODAC) kept pressure on the W&L defense. A cross in from the left side was met by the head of a W&L defender, but the ball was redirected backwards and crossed the goal line just before junior Kate McEnroe could swat the ball away.
  • Coming out of halftime with a 1-0 lead, the Generals peppered the Batten goal with three shots inside the first five minutes. Batten keeper Allie Greco made three tough saves, however, to keep her side in it.
  • One of W&L's best and final chances at regaining the lead came in the 87th minute when junior Aubrey Dunbar got herself a good look at a shot. Greco made yet another tough save though to help the Marlins hold on for the draw.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Brown's goal was her third of the season and it came on E. Zimmerman's sixth assist of the year, tied for the most on the team.
  • E. Zimmerman led W&L with three shot attempts in the game, with five other players each shooting twice.
  • Emma Nguyen and Courtney Mills tallied two shots for the Batten offense, while five players tallied one shot on goal each.
  • McEnroe finished the game with five saves in the W&L goal, with Greco stopping seven shots.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Despite the draw, the Generals remain atop the ODAC table, one point clear of Lynchburg, with three games remaining. W&L also extended its overall (30) and home (41) unbeaten streaks.
  • E. Zimmerman is now just three assists away from entering the program's career Top 10. Saturday's helper was the 17th of her career, three away from tying Jenny Thomas '03 and Michelle Bauman '97 for ninth.
TEAM STATS:
  • The Generals took eight shots in both halves to finish at 16 for the game, with a total of eight attempts on goal. The Marlins ended the day with eight shots and five on goal.
  • Corner kicks were nearly split evenly, with Batten owning the slight 8-7 edge.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will return to action on Wednesday evening with a 5:00 p.m. start against Randolph-Macon.
