Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 2 W&L picks up win at Roanoke in final road game of the season

SALEM, Va. – The No. 2 Washington and Lee women's soccer team battled out a 1-0 win at Roanoke on Saturday afternoon in the team's final road game of the regular season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first big chance of the game came from the Maroons (7-6-4, 4-3-2 ODAC) in the 10th minute when Rebecca Carr found herself on a breakaway with a chance to give her side the lead. Junior Kate McEnroe came up clutch though for the Generals (13-0-2, 8-0-1 ODAC) with a save at the top of the 18 to keep it scoreless.
  • W&L outshot Roanoke, 10-2, in the first half, but only managed two shots on goal. Roanoke's Grace Suchy made an impressive save in the 15th minute to deny junior Megan Zimmerman a scoring chance from outside the box.
  • The Generals finally broke through on the scoreboard in the 61st minute when junior Elizabeth Zimmerman played a centering pass inside the box to senior Emily Burke. Burke got enough behind her shot near the six to get it by Suchy for the 1-0 lead.
  • Roanoke had a spell of possession in the second half and threatened to equalize, but only had shot two shots on goal in the final 15 minutes. McEnroe had no issues making the saves, as both came right into her arms.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Burke netted her 10th goal of the season, joining M. Zimmerman as the only players on the team in double digits for the season. Elizabeth Zimmerman dished out her seventh assist of the season, tying her sister for the team lead.
  • Burke led the offense with six shot attempts, while she and the Zimmermans combined to take 15 of the team's 21 shots in the game.
  • Carr and Madalyn Szoke paced the Roanoke offense with three shots each. Suchy made eight saves in the Roanoke goal.
  • McEnroe posted her fifth clean sheet of the season and the team's 10th of the year. She totaled six saves, her third game in the last four with at least five stops.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Generals remain the top team in the ODAC table at 25 points, with Lynchburg (24 pts) and Batten (23 pts) close behind. W&L can clinch its third consecutive regular season title and tournament 1-seed with a win on Wednesday.
  • W&L ran its win streak against Roanoke to eight games on Saturday, each of which has been a shutout. It was the first time, however, the Maroons kept the game within a goal since a 1-1 draw in 2021.
TEAM STATS:
  • W&L outshot the Maroons 21-9 for the game after an 11-7 edge in the second half. The teams combined for 15 shots on goal, nine of which came from the Blue and White.
  • The Generals collected 12 corner kicks and conceded four.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will close out the 2026 regular season on Wednesday with a 5:00 p.m. start at home against Bridgewater.
