Women's Soccer vs. Roanoke

LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year forwards Allie Espina (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) and Kat Barnes (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) netted two goals apiece to lead the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over ODAC-foe Roanoke in the home-opener on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Maroons (2-3-1, 0-1) quickly got on board when senior forward Kristen McCoy (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) found the back of the net unassisted just 1:25 into the first half. W&L countered 14:54 later when Espina slipped a shot past Roanoke goalkeeper Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, Va./Mountain View) at 16:09 (1-1). The Generals added another marker when Barnes scored the game-winner unassisted at 41:27 to give W&L a 2-1 edge at the half.  Barnes and Espina helped pad the Generals' lead with scores at 53:30 and 73:53, respectively, en route to the three-goal victory.

Senior netminder Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played the entire contest for the Blue and White and did not make any saves, while Kooiman stopped five shots for Roanoke.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday as they take on Ferrum at home. The game is slated to begin at 4:30 pm.
