LEXINGTON, Va. – Two second-half goals from sophomore
Megan Zimmerman powered the No. 16 Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 2-1 comeback win over Shenandoah on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Despite no goals in the first half, both teams had plenty of action, combining for 16 shots, nine from the Hornets (2-5-3, 1-1-0 ODAC), and eight total shots on goal. Both Kate McEnroe and Morgan Musselman had four saves apiece in the first half.
- The Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute when McKenna Newcome stole the ball in the W&L (6-2-1, 2-0-0 ODAC) defensive third and laid it off for Ellie Ajello to the right. Ajello was left one-on-one with McEnroe, and she scored inside the right post.
- Zimmerman had a quick response for the Blue and White to equalize just seven minutes later. Senior Helen Otteni controlled and pushed the ball out to first-year Mary Parrish Green just outside the box, who lofted the ball inside. Zimmerman leaped and headed the ball across the frame and in to tie the game.
- Green and Zimmerman teamed up once more in the 74th minute. Green, again from the left, lobbed a pass towards Zimmerman at the top of the box. Zimmerman chested the ball down and hit a left-footed shot out of the reach of Molly Donaldson and just inside the right post.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Zimmerman capped off a huge week for the W&L offense, scoring her fourth and fifth goals of the season, which were also her third and fourth goals this week.
- Green's two assists were the first two of her collegiate career, while Otteni earned her second assist of the season on the first goal.
- Senior Sarah Zimmerman led W&L with five shots in the game and two on goal, while Newcome had a game-high six shots.
- McEnroe played all 90 minutes in the W&L goal and made five saves to earn the win. Musselman played the first half in the SU goal and made four saves, before Donaldson covered the second half and made three saves.
