VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The No. 16 Washington and Lee women's soccer team opened ODAC play in style on Wednesday, downing Virginia Wesleyan, 4-0, in a rematch of last season's conference championship game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (5-2-1, 1-0-0 ODAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when sophomore Elizabeth Zimmerman found sophomore Megan Zimmerman for a header goal. E. Zimmerman took on a defender on the left side before crossing to the back post, where M. Zimmerman finished the score.
- W&L then added a goal with just seven seconds before the half. A corner kick was quickly put into the center of the box where VWU (5-2-1, 0-1-0 ODAC) goalkeeper Allie Greco tried to punch it away. The ball came right to junior Emily Burke who found the back of the net.
- Megan Zimmerman added another goal to her tally in the 50th minute when E. Zimmerman flicked the ball through traffic inside the box for the right-footed finish at the left post.
- Elizabeth Zimmerman then scored a goal of her own when she headed in a close-range cross from the left side off the foot of junior Stephanie Zawtocki.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- The Zimmerman twins highlighted the W&L offense. Elizabeth finished with a goal and two assists, while Megan scored twice. Burke's goal was her first of the year, with Zawtocki getting her first assist of the season.
- Elizabeth Zimmerman took a team-high three shots, while Megan and Sarah Zimmerman, and Helen Otteni, each took two shots.
- Sophomore Kate McEnroe and senior Abby Groff combined on the shutout in the W&L goal. McEnroe made three saves in 73:36 of action. Groff covered the final 16:24.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- With Wednesday's win, the Generals extended their regular season ODAC winning streak to 13 games.
- After Wednesday's game, all three Zimmermans stand atop the team leaderboard in points. Megan is first with eight points (3g, 2a), Sarah is second at seven points (3g, 1a) and Elizabeth ranks third (1g, 4a).
TEAM STATS:
- The Generals ended the game with a 13-5 edge in shot attempts, which included a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.
- Three corner kicks were taken in the game, two by W&L, and all three came in the first half.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will host their first ODAC game of the season on Saturday when they welcome Shenandoah to town for a 1:00 p.m. start.
