SEWANEE, Tenn. – Ninth-ranked Washington and Lee University advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship with a commanding 19-5 victory over host Sewanee: University of the South on Sunday afternoon at Puett Field. The Generals improved to 18-4 and remained perfect in the all-time series with Sewanee, now 4-0, including a pair of postseason triumphs.
Game Summary
W&L asserted control from the opening whistle, outscoring the previously unbeaten Tigers 8-2 in the first quarter and never looking back.
Hannah Van Son tallied four of her game-high five goals in the first frame, fueling an early 5-1 run that put Sewanee on its heels. The Generals continued to dominate in all facets, building a 12-3 halftime lead and limiting the Tigers to just two goals over the final 45 minutes.
Defensively, W&L was smothering, forcing 21 turnovers and holding Sewanee to just nine shots on goal. The Tigers never scored consecutively after the first half and were shut out in the fourth quarter.
Individual Performances
Nine different Generals scored in the win, with Van Son (5 goals) and
Emma Marsh (4 goals, 1 assist) leading the charge.
Grace Kim notched a hat trick, while
Sophie Edwards added two goals and an assist. Additional scorers included
Brianna Benoit,
Caroline Foster,
Lara Baki,
Claire Horner, and
Katie Reed. Horner contributed a game-high two assists, while Baki, Foster, Edwards, and Reed also chipped in helpers.
On the defensive end, seven players collected multiple ground balls, including
Ciara Smith (4),
Emma Marsh (3) and
Sophia Caffrey (3). Five players caused multiple turnovers, led by
Libby Ford with three, and Van Son and
Katie Reed with two each. Goalkeeper
Iman Haddad made eight saves in the complete-game effort.
